Why regenerate trees: the impact of nature-based sustainability

28 October 2024

At Treebytree we’re all about growing a greener future, one tree at a time. But why trees?

With so many sustainability options out there, we choose trees because they offer an unmatched combination of benefits that address climate change, biodiversity, and land restoration — all at once.

Let’s explore the impact of regenerating trees and how our partners’ unique approach, Kisiki Hai, boosts the power of nature.

Trees: The natural solution with huge impact

Trees are nature’s most effective problem-solvers, bringing benefits that support climate health, biodiversity, and communities alike. Just one mature tree captures up to 22 kilograms of CO₂ each year—imagine the difference a whole forest could make.

But trees don’t just absorb carbon. They’re essential homes for countless species, creating habitats that breathe life back into damaged ecosystems. Growing trees isn’t only about adding green to the landscape; it’s about restoring balance and supporting diverse wildlife where it’s needed most. In areas threatened by desertification, trees play a critical role by stabilizing soil, improving water retention, and renewing the land, which provides a vital resource for local communities.

And they possess another superpower: trees actively purify the air and water, filtering out pollutants and creating healthier environments for all. With each tree we restore, we take a step toward a healthier, more resilient world.

Why we regenerate trees instead of planting

There are many ways to go green, but tree regeneration offers something special: it creates new growth from existing life. Our approach isn’t about planting—it’s about bringing trees back in a way that lasts using the Kisiki Hai Method.

Regenerating trees allows for:

Scalability

Regenerating trees can be done on a massive scale across different geographies. While solar panels or windturbines have big capital requirements and regulations, tree regeneration can be practiced almost everywhere.

Harnessing nature’s resilience with Kisiki Hai

Our partners use and teach the Kisiki Hai technique to harness nature’s resilience. This traditional method, developed in East Africa, regenerates trees by encouraging new growth from existing stumps. When a tree is cut, the remaining stump still holds a network of roots that can be revitalized. By carefully pruning the sprouts that emerge, we stimulate robust and rapid regrowth, allowing the tree to thrive once more.

The benefits of Kisiki Hai are profound. Since the roots are already established, the tree grows back significantly faster than a newly planted sapling, making it a highly efficient solution for regenerating forests. It’s also a cost-effective approach, as it requires fewer resources than planting new trees. Moreover, this method is deeply community-driven, involving local people who are trained to manage the regrowth, fostering long-term stewardship of the land. Additionally, because the tree is regenerating from an existing root system, it has a much higher survival rate, even in challenging environments.

By using Kisiki Hai, we not only bring trees back to life but also empower communities and restore landscapes more sustainably.

Together with businesses and resellers, at Treebytree we’ve managed to regenerate nearly 600,000 trees in Tanzania using the Treecovery technique!

We’re always exploring new ways to make sustainability accessible. In the future, we plan to introduce a wider range of sustainable gifting options, from different sorts of trees to products that support circular economies and other nature-based solutions. Our goal is to offer businesses more ways to give back while aligning with their environmental values.
